The Gardens at Wynyard Hall have been named amongst the top four “Favourite British Gardens with collections of English Roses” by David Austen, alongside Kew Gardens, R.H.S. Wisley and Bodnant Garden.
The Gardens, which opened in 2015, feature a superb walled garden which showcases over 3000 roses planted with a wide range of perennials. Designed by Alistair Baldwin, the walled garden is full of colour and heavenly scent, with meandering paths and beautiful water features.
Head Gardener, Mark Birtle, is delighted with the recognition. “The people from David Austen are always highly complementary, but it’s great to be formally recognised as one of the best gardens to visit in the whole country for our collection of English Roses”.
“We work really hard to cultivate and maintain such a high standard, but it’s worth it when you stand back and see the results. They are literally breath-taking – especially at this time of year”.
In addition to the team of highly professional gardeners, Mark works alongside his two sons, Leo and Will.
“I’m delighted the boys have chosen to follow in my footsteps. We all love the outdoors and it’s great to spend time with them doing what we love”.
In addition to the walled garden, the collection of gardens include a wild garden, edible garden and woodland walk. The Edible Garden is used to grow a wide range of vegetables, fruits and herbs. They are harvested and used throughout the estate’s kitchens. The chefs can also be seen regularly foraging in the woodland and wider estate!
The Woodland Walk is a 3km trail through the historic woodland. As well as features of historic interest, there is also a children’s play area featuring a wooden train crafted by a local carpenter, alongside wicker huts and tipi’s that will stimulate little imaginations!
With so much to see and a regular calendar of events, The Gardens are a great place to visit this summer. And now, you can enjoy unlimited visits to The Gardens and Woodland Walk for 12-months for just £6! Book online at www.wynyardhall.co.uk.
