We love sharing real wedding stories, so we asked newly-weds Daryl and Rebecca how they felt about their big day at Wynyard Hall after their Winter Wedding…
Daryl, 30, Project Engineer
Rebecca, 25, Nursery Teacher
Where are you from?
We’re both from Hartlepool
Can you tell us how you met?
Being from a smallish town our circle of friends would often overlap, but it was only until Daryl’s brother and my friend had a date that we ended up meeting properly one evening. We both just knew straight away.
Tell us about the proposal…
We were living in Doha, Qatar at the time. It was 5 days before our 3 year anniversary (since we properly met and became a couple), on the morning Daryl said he’d planned something for it and had booked me in for a blow dry. I of course thought it was a lovely surprise and assumed he had booked a meal and drinks for us. As we got into the car I had no idea where we were heading, then we pulled up to the marina. Daryl had charted a yacht for a day! He had sneakily planned all this and on the morning had arranged for food and Champagne to be on the yacht. Me, maybe being naive as Daryl often arranges lovely gestures and surprises, although none quite like this, had no idea he was going to propose. After about an hour on the yacht, on the waters of the Persian Gulf, Daryl got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I was speechless!
What made you choose Wynyard Hall?
From being a little girl I used to go horse riding and we would always drive past Wynyard Hall. At this time it was Sir John’s private residence. As we drove past we would open the sunroof and look out and see Wynyard Hall from a distance. When it opened as a hotel in 2008 it was just as beautiful as I had always imagined it would be. There was never going to be another option for a venue – It just had to be Wynyard Hall.
What is your favourite room and why?
The Conservatory is our favourite room. Big, light, open and airy but still has that warm and cosy feeling!
What colour scheme did you choose?
Our colour scheme was silvery grey, we had a winter wedding in December and my bouquet was white roses, acorns and silver foliage. Our centre pieces were white winter trees with a soft light.
What wedding menus did you choose? What was special about the food or service?
We decided on pâté to start, beef for main and raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake for dessert. We definitely made the right choice and I’m sure our guests would agree! Service was incredible as expected.
How many guests did you have?
We had 70 day guests and an extra 20 guests in the evening.
What was your Wedding Coordinator like to work with?
Ingrid was our Wedding Coordinator and she was absolutely fabulous in the lead up to the wedding, promptly answering all our questions. Tony looked after us on the day and he was also wonderful, he made sure the day ran seamlessly.
What did you do the day or night before your Wedding?
The day before the wedding I had beauty appointments and collected my dress. Daryl and I met for lunch and parted for the final time until I would see him at the altar the next day. The night before the wedding I had a sleepover at my mum’s house with my bridesmaids, my parents put on a little spread and we had a toast. Daryl went round to his friend’s house as there was boxing on. I was slightly worried they were going to get him drunk the day before the wedding. But Daryl was sensible – Thank god!
Tell us about the dress…
My dress was from Laura Day in Middlesbrough. I went for a fitted, backless dress, with a long train – it was beautiful and timeless. My bridesmaids wore stunning, simple floor length grey dresses with delicate lace detail.
What did the groom wear, and where was it from?
Daryl wore a mismatch suit from Reiss, a grey jacket and black trousers. He looked amazing.
Tell us about your wedding photos… which one was your favourite and why?
After a lot of research online, we came across Andrew who owns Diamond Photography. We knew immediately he was the photographer for us. The pictures from his website were so relaxed and natural and this was the photography style we wanted. I don’t think I could possible pick a favourite photograph from the day!
Tell us about your entertainment…
Hip Operation provided our entertainment. We have seen them before at two weddings and already knew how great they are! On a few occasions they left the stage and came down and performed on the dance floor. I have never seen them do this before and the guests loved it!
And your honeymoon?
For our honeymoon we planned a little Euro trip. We skied in Chamonix, France for 5 days, had 3 days in Austria over Christmas, 3 days in Budapest, finishing up our final 3 days in London to see the New Year in.
Was there anything extra special or unusual about your wedding?
Extra special because I was marrying my absolute best friend! It was a beautiful traditional British wedding.
Do you have any wedding planning tips?
Relax and enjoy every second of it.
Would you recommend Wynyard Hall to other couples?
Absolutely – no question.
