We were delighted to welcome Megan and Kirk for their wedding at Wynyard Hall. The special day came after Kirk made a romantic proposal on Christmas day of 2012. He put the most beautiful engagement ring in a Christmas cracker. It certainly was a wonderful surprise and made for the best Christmas ever. The couple celebrated by going to New York the week after, for that reason, Megan told us she was on cloud nine!
We asked the newly-weds to share their experience, and here’s how they felt about their big day…
Q. Firstly, how did you meet?
We met through mutual friends a few years back – we’d often enjoy nights out with the same group of friends.
Q. How did you set your wedding date?
We decided to get married on 16th February 2015 because this was my birthday and the date of our engagement party 2 years prior!
Q. How did you find your wedding photographer?
I really loved soft, pastel style photography so we chose Sarah Jane Ethan who was perfect and highly recommended by another photographer.
Q. How did you feel when you saw your wedding photos for the first time?
Sarah emailed us while we were on our honeymoon. The images were exactly as we wished and I chose the photos for our wedding album in just a few weeks.
Q. And, what about a wedding video?
One Digital Image created our wedding video. Janet and Chris are amazing and the video is my favourite memory of our wedding because it captures every single special moment.
Q. Where did you get married?
As soon as I saw Wynyard Hall, I knew I wanted to get married there because it ticked every box for us. We didn’t really have a theme, I just knew I wanted my bridesmaids in my favourite colour pink and wanted the centrepieces and flowers to match.
Q. Tell us about the dress…
My wedding dress was Justin Alexander, purchased from ‘Bridal Wish’, an amazing little bridal boutique in Blagdon. It was the first dress I tried on, and I can’t remember ever feeling so good in something.
Q. What did the groom wear?
My husband, the best man and the groomsmen were each dressed in a top hat and tails, in grey with a pink cravat. Similarly, the bridesmaids wore matching pink beautiful floor length dresses from a dress shop called Paris in Gateshead, accessorised with white fur shawls draped around their shoulders (these were made by Biba).
Q. Who designed your wedding stationery?
Because my mum is super creative, she made most of our wedding stationery herself.
Q. Tell us about your flowers…
I chose the flowers for my bridesmaids, buttonholes and my bouquet from Flower Angels in Sunderland. My bouquet was extra special and made from brooches and sparkly things. Our wedding favours were tiny bird cages, which gently cradled a beautiful fresh flower. Most noteworthy, the wedding cake was a stunning white castle, 4 tiers high and each tier contained a different but equally as delicious type of cake – fruit cake, red velvet, carrot cake and chocolate, mmm.
Q. How did you entertain your guests?
Firstly, we had a photo booth and then we had a DJ throughout the evening reception.
Q. What was your favourite part of the day?
When my husband and I announced that we were expecting our first baby. It was a surprise to most of our guests and the atmosphere in the room was almost electric.
Q. Where did you go for your honeymoon?
I opened a card from my husband on the morning of our wedding. It contained surprise tickets to Paris. As I was pregnant I didn’t want to do anything too extravagant and Paris certainly is the city of romance, so it was simply perfect.
Q. Lastly, do you have any tips for other couples getting married at Wynyard Hall?
Yes, just enjoy every little second of your day, it’s over before you know it.
