Guests gather on the tranquil lakeside terrace to bask in the warm sunlight, lush green parklands envelope the hall, and The Gardens are in full bloom, bursting with flushed roses and vibrant blossoms – romance swells in the air, summer has arrived. Here at Wynyard Hall, we love sharing real wedding stories from our wonderful couples. To celebrate the beginning of the wedding season, we asked newly-weds Kimberley Mason and Steven Johnson to share their summer-wedding experience and tell us all about their big day.
Tell us about the proposal…
The proposal took place on top of the Rockerfella Centre in New York, it was a complete surprise! Then Steven took me to a jewellers to have a ring designed and made just for me.
What made you choose Wynyard Hall?
Wynyard Hall is beautiful inside and out, it took my breath away the first time I saw it, and I knew immediately that it was where I wanted to get married.
What is your favourite function space and why?
The Mirror Room! It is a beautiful, light and airy room that epitomises class and elegance. We went for a traditional ivory and silver theme, with roses, freesias, stephanotis and gypsophilas.
How many guests did you have?
There were 70 guests in the day time, with 110 altogether in the evening.
What wedding menu did you choose? What was special about the food and service?
We had canapés served after the ceremony, followed by a Champagne Afternoon Tea. The food was amazing, all the guests commented on how delicious the canapés were, and how unique and lovely the Afternoon Tea was.
What was your Wedding Coordinator like to work with? Were there any staff who particularly stood out on the day?
Our Wedding Coordinator Claire was fantastic, we could not have wished for anyone better! She was extremely friendly, professional, happy and knowledgeable. All of our questions were answered and all of our requests met. All of the staff on the day were excellent!
What did you do the day or night before your wedding?
I stayed over at Wynyard Hall with my Mum and a Bridesmaid. We took a walk around the beautiful grounds and then had some food in the Wellington Restaurant.
Tell us about the dress…What style was it? Where was it from? What did your bridesmaids wear?
I wore a 1950s style dress, it was made for me by Lynne of Special Occasions in Sunderland. Lynne also made my Bridesmaid’s dresses in the style of Pippa Middleton’s dress at the Royal Wedding.
What did the groom wear and where was it from?
He wore a three piece suit, by Master Debonair.
Tell us about your wedding photos, which one was your favourite and why?
Our photographs were taken by Faye Collins of Faye Collins Photography. It’s impossible to pick a favourite, every shot is fantastic and she managed to get the beautiful surroundings into every picture.
Tell us about your entertainment…
We had a Rockabilly style band named The Troubleshooters, they were fantastic and had every guest up dancing.
And your honeymoon?
Two weeks all-inclusive in Mauritius!
Was there anything extra special or unusual about your wedding?
I believe it was a tasteful, elegant and timeless occasion. Furthermore, every guest said it was the best wedding they’ve ever been to!
Do you have any wedding planning tips?
Use your Wedding Coordinator, they are a fantastic help! Also, use friends and family to help plan and organise things, don’t take it all on yourself.
Lastly, would you recommend Wynyard Hall to other couples?
Without a doubt.
