Newly-weds Laura and Jake were happy to tell us about their special day at Wynyard Hall, and there’s plenty to inspire you! Stunning wedding photos, gorgeous centre-pieces, a fabulous cake table and more!
Laura and Jake have known each other since going to Sunderland College together from the age of 16. They then rekindled their friendship again 2012 when they bumped into each other on a night out.
The couple were married on 18th June 2016, at a beautiful classic wedding at Wynyard Hall. We couldn’t wait to share their big day, so here’s their story.
Tell us about the proposal…
Jake proposed on holiday in Marrakech in December 2013. He asked me to come out onto the balcony one night as I was getting ready. He had his IPad set up… I sat down and watched an amazing slideshow he had made about our relationship so far. At the end, it said he needed to ask me something, I turned around and he was down on one knee! After he proposed, he told me there was a little more to the video, the film continued playing and there were lots of congratulations videos from family and friends back home. So everyone knew about the proposal! It was magical. He followed this up with a surprise engagement party when we returned home, I don’t know how he manged to keep it all a secret!
What colour scheme / theme did you choose?
Our colour scheme was pink and blush tones with gold. We didn’t really have a ‘theme’ as such, we just wanted everything to be very classic and beautiful.
Tell us a bit about your wedding photos…
We chose Helen Russell as our photographer. She was absolutely amazing! Although we did have group shots, we wanted lots of laid back, informal photos of ourselves, our friends and family enjoying the day. Helen captured the mood of the wedding perfectly and managed to photograph absolutely everything we wanted right up to the first dance.
We were lucky and had beautiful weather on the day, so we had a variety of indoor and outdoor shots. Some of my favourite are those down by the lake and in the pretty chapel. We would recommend her to anyone planning a wedding!
What food did you go for?
We had a selection of canapés during the drinks reception and chose smoked salmon roulade, beetroot and goat’s cheese macaroon and chicken liver parfait, red onion marmalade and toast.
For our wedding breakfast we chose the twice baked cheese and sun blush tomato soufflé, spinach and gruyere cheese, followed by the sirloin of beef and lemon posset with blistered raspberries and shortbread to finish.
The food and the service was perfect, we couldn’t fault it at all. In particular the soufflé starter was absolutely amazing.
Our dessert table was provided by Bernadette at Dreamworld Cakes. It looked fabulous and was a real centre-piece and talking point for guests. We had a four tier cake alongside matching mini cakes and cupcakes, white chocolate cake pops, artisan meringues and rose and salted caramel macaroons.
Tell us about your entertainment…
We had quite a few entertainers! Firstly, during the drinks reception in the main hall we booked a pocket orchestra through our Wedding Co-ordinator, to provide some soft backing music.
We had a singer called Anthony Stringer who sang during our wedding breakfast, which created a lovely mood in the room.
During the room changeover we had a magician called Rich Stephens mingling with our guests. This was perfect timing as the sun was shining and everyone was sitting out on the Terrace, so we escaped to the gardens to get more photographs!
For the evening reception we booked a band as we really wanted some live music. Glen Roughead and the Paul James Band were great and got everyone up dancing. The night was finished off with a DJ until the early hours.
What did your family and friends say about the wedding day?
All of our family and friends had the most amazing day and just can’t stop talking about how fantastic and how well planned it was. Wynyard Hall made the day go so smoothly and everyone was so impressed with the professionalism of all the staff and the grandeur of the Hall. Everyone was so sad when it was all over!
What made you choose Wynyard Hall?
Wynyard Hall was my immediate choice as soon as we got engaged. It was the first place and only place we went to view. One of the main factors for us was that we could get married in the chapel on site and we didn’t then have to travel anywhere for the reception. Plus, the whole venue is so grand and magnificent, it was an easy choice for us!
Was there anything extra special or unusual about your wedding?
The 18th June was particularly important to me and my family as my Dad sadly passed away when I was young and 18.6.16 marked the 20-year anniversary. This is why we chose that specific date, and turned a sad day into a happy one!
Do you have any wedding planning tips for future brides and grooms?
Take your time researching suppliers and designing your day. Do exactly what you want as you’ll only get the chance to do it once. Enjoy your day and take a minute to stand back and take it all in as it is over in the blink of an eye.
Would you recommend Wynyard Hall to other couples?
Absolutely! The whole day was perfect from start to finish. Everyone we dealt with was so professional and really looked after us and our guests.
