Real Weddings: Alexandra & Andrew

Bride and Groom

The Proposal

We got engaged in February 2012, while in Sydney on a balcony overlooking Darling Harbour. It was very relaxed and intimate, just the two of us after a day at the beach. We finished the evening with champagne at the Opera Bar.

The Venue

We were married and had our reception at Wynyard Hall. First and foremost we knew we wanted a big wedding – as we live in Australia we wanted all of our family and friends to be able to join us. Wynyard Hall has a brilliant reputation in the area so choosing the venue was really easy for us. We wanted a traditional building which has a lot of history as Andrew is really interested in architecture. Wynyard Hall and its grounds are truly spectacular and we felt very lucky to hold our celebrations there.

Our wedding co-ordinator Emily was amazing from day one: cool, calm and collected at all times! The staff on the day were impeccable, all very well trained and friendly. We loved the way we could utilise the rooms as we wanted; we had three rooms and the terrace in total, which really made our day special. We would rate Wynyard Hall 10/10. The venue itself is perfect, fit for a real life fairy tale.

The Photographer

Our wedding photographer was the incredible David West. We found David’s work really personable and it was exactly what we were looking for, something different yet traditional. We also really loved the candid flair that David brings to his photography. David and his second photographer Gavin were fantastic on the day of our wedding, giving great direction and making everyone feel really comfortable in front of the lens. We were amazed by our photographs when we received them, they really brought back the emotions felt on the day. Seeing the images just cemented the fact that we had chosen the perfect photographer for us.

The Details

We decided not to pick a set theme for our wedding and instead just chose things we liked as we went along and trusted that it would all come together in the end. Which it did! Our colour scheme was navy blue. My maid of honour Katie wore a full length, cap sleeve navy dress and Andrew and the groomsmen wore navy suits. We wanted the wedding flowers to have a wild, just-picked feel. The bouquets and arrangements created for us were simply amazing and included feathers and fur. Instead of a traditional sweet wedding cake, we decided to have a savoury cheese cake, which was made up of several different flavours and looked beautiful.

The Dress

I knew I wanted to wear a very simple dress on our big day to suit my personal style. I also knew I didn’t want something similar to any other wedding dress I’d seen at the time. I wore a full length silk gown by Jennifer Regan, along with a custom made crown by Viktoria Novak. As my dress was so simple, I wanted to make statement with my headpiece. It was definitely the talking point of my look.

The Special Touches

We had all of our stationery custom made from The Distillery in Sydney, Australia. They specialise in letterpress which is something Andrew and I both love and it was amazing to see the invitations being created on machines that were over 100 years old. Our place cards were completed with hand written calligraphy to complement the overall style.
Andrew was in charge of sourcing a wedding band to provide entertainment. As we were so far away from the UK we relied heavily on Google and family and friends to help us to find the perfect vendors. We hired a band named The Regulators, who were simply amazing! I’ve never seen a dance floor so full and the fact they doubled as a DJ was an added bonus.
