Real Wedding: Joanne & Paul’s Romantic Summer Wedding

Romantic Summer Wedding at Wynyard Hall

Paul Lee (35), and Joanne Lee (29), both from Billingham, tied the knot with a romantic summer wedding ceremony at Wynyard Hall.

With 95 guests during the day and 125 guests attending the evening celebration, Wynyard Hall provided the perfect backdrop for this bride and groom to celebrate with their closest friends and family in luxury.

Can you tell us a little about how you met?

We met at a local Billingham pub on a Friday night. Paul was working away from home at the time and had just arrived back. It was Joanne who pursued Paul and made him take her number!
Paul proposed in Las Vegas at the top of the Stratosphere. He kept it a massive surprise and actually told me (Joanne) that we were going to jump of the Stratosphere as a reason to get me up there! Instead of doing the jump, we got to a secluded balcony area and he proposed. We had our engagement meal at Bubba Shrimp on the Vegas strip and celebrated by going to see Rod Stewart (hence the theme of our first dance song!).

What made you choose Wynyard Hall?

When we walked into Wynyard Hall, we just knew it was the venue for us. We had been to lots of other venues across the North East and for each of those, there was always something we couldn’t agree on. Upon entering Wynyard Hall, we both looked at each other and that was it. We didn’t even have to say anything. We were sold.

Wynyard Hall has that extra sparkle and special ambience. It’s a feeling we didn’t get anywhere else. The instant you walk into Wynyard Hall and look up at that stained glass ceiling, you feel it is something special and that feeling continued throughout our whole tour and wedding planning journey. It was the perfect venue for a romantic summer wedding, which is what we wanted.

Tell us all about your wedding! What colour scheme, theme and flowers did you choose?

We didn’t really have a theme to start with. We just knew we wanted something romantic, elegant, relaxed and something that reflected us. Our theme developed as our wedding plans developed and we just selected things we liked, rather than sticking to a theme. It worked perfectly for us.

Our flowers were selected based on colours and we opted for soft pinks and purples throughout the whole of the wedding. We trusted our florist to build and select the right flowers for us based on our consultation with her.

What wedding menu did you choose?

We went to Wynyard Hall before the wedding for a meal tasting evening. I would highly recommend every couple do this. The staff at Wynyard were so accommodating and allowed us to take aspects of some meals and create our own bespoke menu.

During our pre-wedding menu meal, the chef came out and spoke with us directly about our choices and advised us on starter options and flavours that worked well with each other. It’s all these small touches that you remember and that make planning your wedding even more exciting. We felt the service was above and beyond our expectation.

Did you do anything special on the night before your Wedding?

The Bridal Party stayed at Wynyard Hall the evening before the wedding. We went for a meal the day before and headed over to Wynyard Hall at about 3pm. It was such a perfect evening. Drinking Champagne, ordering room service, sharing stories and listening to wedding music.

The Groom spent the evening out with friends and family and headed home early to get a restful night.

Tell us about the dress… What style was it? Where was it from? What did your bridesmaids wear?

My dress was from Happily Ever After in Darlington. I actually found the dress online when I started wedding planning and then had the difficult task of finding a stockist in the North East. I only found one shop. As soon as I put my dress on, I knew. When I walked out wearing it, my mum cried along with another bridesmaid.

My dress was designed by David Tutera and was called Arwen. It’s a princess style dress with jewelled straps and subtle sequin details. The colour was tea rose, complimented with ivory lace.

My bridesmaids all wore the same dress but altered the style by changing the straps. I had four bridesmaids and our daughter was a flower girl. She wore a beautiful dress which was the same colour as the bridesmaid dresses and had the ivory lace details to match my dress.

We purchased everything for the bridal party from Happily Ever After. Their choice is perfect and they have such a huge range of designs to suit everyone.

What did the groom wear, and where was it from?

The Groom hired a suit from Bakers in Middlesbrough. He wore a navy suit with a checked waistcoat and vibrant tie to make sure he stood out! Bakers’ hire facility is perfect and we would highly recommend. The treat you as though you are buying a suit from them and everything is measured with accuracy for all the party.

Tell us about your wedding photos… which one was your favourite and why?

There’s so many to choose from! We went with RGM Photo and have over 1200 photos from our wedding day! Our favourite photo has to be the one taken with our daughter. Our photographer captured it without us even knowing between family shoots and it captures our family perfectly.

Tell us about your entertainment…

We had a caricature artist (Paul Slattery) after the ceremony who created pictures for people to take away with them from the day. It was so funny and our guests said it took them back to their childhood days which is exactly what we were hoping for! The pictures created were then used as part of our wedding favours on the day.

We also booked a pianist for after the ceremony. At first, we thought this would not be necessary as we got married in July and anticipated nice weather. The weather, however, was awful and all our guests were inside! I am so pleased we booked the pianist. The guests complimented him very highly.

We also had a photo booth and DJ on the evening.

Where did you both jet off to for your honeymoon?

We spent our honeymoon in Disney World, Florida with our daughter. We wanted to go somewhere that would suit all of us and it really is the most magical place on Earth!

Was there anything extra special or unusual about your wedding?

The one thing I would like to add is a special thank you to everyone at Wynyard Hall for creating such a happy, memorable day. My dad suffered a terrible medical incident 3 years ago which means he has lost all of his memories of the day he married my mum, my childhood and lots of family time together. I explained to our wedding coordinator Ashleigh that I did not know how the day would be for my dad and she was so supportive and understanding. We didn’t know if my dad would be able to say his wedding speech and Ashleigh had a backup plan in place for the day if he needed some quiet time to reflect. Safe to say, the day went so smoothly that this was not necessary and my dad now has new memories of such a happy, perfect, amazing day.

Do you have any wedding planning tips?

Just enjoy it! Don’t sweat the small stuff because on your wedding day, you will have so much trust in your wedding team that it won’t even enter your head.
Don’t compete with others and don’t worry…you haven’t forgotten anything! Your guests will just love spending the day with you and feel honoured to be part of your special day.

Would you recommend Wynyard Hall to other couples?

The answer to that question is a resounding YES! We loved Wynyard Hall and the whole day really was amazing. Wynyard Hall will always hold a very special place in our hearts. I literally have nothing negative to say about Wynyard Hall – they delivered the perfect romantic summer wedding, which is just what we wanted! It was absolutely perfect from the day we had our first wedding meeting right to the time of checking out after our wedding. When I go back to Wynyard Hall now, some of the staff still remember us which is just lovely.

We literally wouldn’t even know how to thank Ashleigh, our Wedding Coordinator. There was absolutely nothing that could not be done and nothing was too much to ask. I had no worries on the morning of the wedding because I trusted Ashleigh 100% with everything. I feel like Ashleigh just ‘got us’ and understood exactly what style and atmosphere we were going for. If anything did go wrong on the day, I had (and still have) absolutely no idea about it and that is credit to Ashleigh and her team. It takes a lot of expertise and skill for someone to provide that level of service and make you feel that way. Thank you so much, Ashleigh.
