Botanics have played a pivotal role in the history of Wynyard and as custodians of this estate, we continue to build that legacy. Explore our iconic gardens and arboretum set within the 120 acre private grounds.

History

The Gardens at Wynyard Hall date back to 1623 and have endured many different stages in their development and restoration since. The most notable phase in the history of the gardens would be during the ownership of the 6th Marquess and in particular his wife, Lady Theresa Londonderry who were thought to bring the estate back to life after a period of decay and neglect. Theresa brought creative energy and vision to the development of the formal gardens. A garden album created by Lady Theresa in 1912, records in affectionate detail the gardens she created and adored. “It was she who made Wynyard” Wynyard Tenants, 1844.

Explore The Gardens

<p>Explore the rose garden and discover 3000 David Austen Roses, bursting with colour, plus a fascinating selection of trees and shrubs, carefully highlighted with graceful water features and meandering paths.</p>

<p>A hub of horticultural inspiration, the kitchen garden is filled with raised beds and vegetable plots, growing an array of fruit, vegetables and herbs, used to create the most authentic dining experience in our Glass House restaurant.</p>

<p>Following the construction of the Grand Marquee, this garden provides panoramic views and open spaces to wander or relax. It contains stunning blossom trees, circular Copper Beach hedges and an array of perennial borders.</p>

<p>The wild garden features an alluring selection of more hardy, winter flowering plants. In its former glory, the wild garden encompassed shrubs, plants and bulbs that were carefully placed to colonise naturally. “Wild garden grow, to me your paths are memories and every flower a friend!” Lady Theresa, 1912.</p>

<p>The Arboretum dating back to 1822 comprises of 18 different species including ash, oak, beech and elm as well as Norway spruce, scotch firs, mountain ash, horse chestnut, weeping birch and hazel. Originally the trees grown had specific uses to the Londonderry colliery empire as well as providing scenic beauty however now they offer a peaceful and meditating journey through the valley.</p>

Monuments

<p>Hidden in our trees and historic footpaths are temples, ornamental gates, obelisks and even graves. With a history spanning hundreds of years many of the original features have now gone, but clues left in the landscape allow the imagination to recreate. Wildlife

Our gardens provide homes for lots of different types of wildlife including a family of deer, squirrels, heron, butterflies and our beloved bees that provides our estate honey.

Farmshop & Cafe

Filled with the finest locally sourced food and drink from the North-East, along with our estate-grown produce, the Farmshop is a celebration of artisanal suppliers and products. Perfect for lunch, the Café offers a light, airy space to catch up with friends over a selection of sandwiches, soups and salads.
