The Vision

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to The Gardens at Wynyard Hall.

When I was a boy I used to watch my father tend the roses on our strip of garden in Ashington and, in that garden, at the age of about 14, I made a promise to myself that one day I would have a rose garden of my own.

I was fascinated by roses. I tried to teach myself how to graft them, to take a cutting from one rose to grow another, but my fingers were clumsy and I struggled to get it right. I loved everything about them, especially their colours and their beautiful fragrance. That was many, many years ago and my dream took a back seat while I developed my business.

When I bought Wynyard Hall in 1987, I knew the time had come to do something about it. Over the years I’ve consulted experts from across the UK, finally putting together the team, whose expertise and enthusiasm are responsible for what you are soon about to see.

This rose garden has been many years in the planning and will be spectacular, but it is just the start. Over the next four years we will develop the adjoining gardens and, when the work is done, it will be one of the finest rose gardens in the UK to include a cookery school, children’s garden and valley walks.

It may have been born out of my dream, but this garden isn’t just for me. The North East of England has given me everything I have, and I have tried throughout my working life to give something back to it.

So The Gardens at Wynyard Hall aren’t just mine, they are yours too, and I hope you will get as much pleasure from visiting them as I have from creating them.

Sir John Hall

About the Gardens

A showcase of delicate artistry, The Gardens create a spectacular setting. With over 3,000 roses from floribundas and climbing roses, to the statement English rose, Wynyard Hall is set to be home to one of the largest rose gardens in the UK.

The Gardens have been intricately designed and created by multi RHS award-winning landscape architect Alistair baldwin, along with rose expert Michael Marriott from David Austin Roses, and our incredible team of gardeners here at Wynyard Hall.

In company with the roses, visitors will also discover a careful selection of flowers, shrubs, and trees, highlighted with graceful water features.

“It will be breathtakingly beautiful. No one will have seen anything like it, not on this scale” Alistair Baldwin – Alistair W Baldwin Associates Ltd.

The surrounding gardens have continued to evolve since the first development in 1822. For centuries to follow, they have provided a magical setting for Wynyard Hall.

Garden designer, William Sawrey Gilpin created the initial gardens and instilled gently curved flowerbeds, raised terrace walks, irregularly shaped shrubberies, and winding paths to create beautiful images within the landscape.

Current developments began with the dreams that Sir John Hall had for improving the Wynyard Hall Estate, and today we take immense pride in having worked to make these dreams a reality.

The Visitor Centre

In addition to The Gardens, visitors will also have the option of an array of delightful dishes, cakes, pastries, and beverages – all in our brand new Visitor Centre. Also home to a farm shop, selling everything from freshly baked bread to delicious pasta sauces, pates, and relishes, along with a range of gifts, books, and a selection of stationary.

Plans for The Gardens by no means end here. As part of a long-term plan, there will be a cookery school within its own exclusive edible garden, a vibrant children’s garden, and a series of carefully designed walks that will enable you to explore the beautiful grounds like never before.

A Horticultural Overview of the Gardens

The Stepped Plats

A formal grid of large raised beds is overlain with swathes of colour-graded roses and companion plants.  Intersecting gently-sloping paths provide an ever-changing perspective on the planting, with four contemplative pools punctuating the grid.  The hues of the planting evolve diagonally across the grid from warm yellows, through lemon tones, to oranges and rusts, through claret and magenta to the palest of coral pinks.

The Wild Gardens

Designed to evoke the spatial quality of small copses, the Wild Gardens show roses arranged amongst carefully composed matrices of shade-tolerant plants.  The flowing arrangement of sweeping paths is overlaid with the precise geometry of a low circular evergreen hedge, evoking the concept of the central open glade.

The Pillar Garden

Inspired by the babbling rills of Moorish walled gardens and the perimeter colonnaded walks of Greek and Roman courtyard gardens, the Pillar Garden occupies the high ground of the western end.  A riot of yellows and oranges splices across the garden, while a symphony of gradated hot and cool pinks, blues and violets frames the two upper pools.

The West Border

A central pergola offers a resting point and a framed view down the centre of the entire garden.  Cool pinks are juxtaposed with warm pinks and whites, against a simple backdrop of soft textures and silver tones to give this east-facing border an ethereal quality in the cool of the afternoon shade.

The Belltower Border

Radiated heat from the garden wall and an abundance of light mean this south-facing border can host an array of plants from more southerly climes.  Rich tones have been chosen, to absorb rather than reflect the strong light, while silvery hues evoke the sense of the Mediterranean.  A collection of original fruit trees trained on the wall is a reminder of the gardens productive past.

The South Border

There are plenty of roses which will thrive in the microclimate of a north-facing wall, and here they are combined with bold swathes of shade tolerant plants. Trees lend height to the border, and help to anchor the planting against the scale of the wall.
