The Local Area

Based on the fringes of Durham and Tees Valley Wynyard Hall is central to some of the most amazing places to visit. Whether it be for delegate partners or as part of a visit to the area we can recommend the following activities, all on our doorstop there is something for everyone.

  • Durham Cathedral, a world heritage site is the greatest Norman building in Britain today. Standing on top of the hill in the centre of this historic city it provides a stunning peaceful diversion to busy bustle of Durham’s streets below.
  • The Metro Centre is a shopping mecca for visitors, and has everything you could possibly need for the perfect day out. It is Europe’s largest combined shopping and leisure centre with over 320 shops, an 11-screen cinema, Megabowl Entertainment Centre and its own indoor theme park, Metroland.
  • Hadrian’s Wall was built in AD 122 under the order of Emporor Hadrian, to separate the land of the Britons from the land of the Picts. Listed as a world heritage site, the wall runs 73 miles from Wallsend to the Solway coast, where visitors can explore the forts and milecastles as the Romans did 2000 years ago.
  • Whitby, on a steep wooded inlet of the River Esk, offers a delightful combination of fishing port and tourist centre. This ancient town is famed for fostering the genius of Captain Cook and his sailing ships; and the ruined abbey which dominates the East Cliff of the town is a must for all visitors.
  • York, the north’s spiritual capital for 2000 years, is central to Britain's colourful history. Visit the stunning York Minster, enjoy Stonegate and Shambles shopping and live the York history at the JORVIK Viking Centre, National Railway Museum and York Castle Museum.
  • High Force, on the River Tees in Teesdale, is certainly one of England’s largest and most impressive waterfalls. A spectacular sight in all seasons, the roar of the water is truly astounding as it falls 70 feet into the plunge pool below.
